Hannah Hyland is the editor of our monthly newsletter and the genius behind many of our graphics posts on social media. If you get the chance to chat with her for a few minutes, you can see she is a science visionary with a passion for science communication and her enthusiasm for both is contagious. She grew up in Wisconsin and California, graduated high at 16, and immediately pursued her associates degree in Psychology at her local community college. At Antelope Valley Community College, she first learned about the Dutch famine studies which sparked her interest in our biological genetic makeup (“nature”), how our environment shapes us (“nurture”), and its interactions (“epigenetics”). These questions drove her to pursue research studying how environmental cues impact the brain, a driving force in her subsequent research and education as an undergraduate research assistant at UC Davis in the lab of Dr. Brian Trainor, as the lab manager for Dr. Kevin Bath at Columbia University, and as a recent applicant to graduate masters and PhD programs.

When someone asks “So, what do you study?” or responds with, “Well, that’s not what I read...”; how can we effectively share our science with friends and family? How can we share our passion for science when navigating difficult conversations?
You’re in luck because we often wonder about the same questions! So, during this past holiday season, we created a “Sharing your Science” guide!
